Every day that she opens her eyes to a new day she is thankful just to be alive.<\/p>\n<h3>An unexpected diagnosis<\/h3>\n<p>She left home at 16 and had been on her own for five years.\u00a0A\u00a0lump in her neck wouldn\u2019t go away,\u00a0so she\u00a0scheduled an appointment with the ENT specialist. That\u2019s when her fight to live began.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/get-support\/get-matched\/with-a-cancer-survivor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-3428 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/match-me-cube.png?resize=189%2C189&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"match me cube\" width=\"189\" height=\"189\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I was getting a cold, but it\u00a0wasn\u2019t getting better,\u201d\u00a0Mona\u00a0recalls. \u201cMy neck was so hard that the needle wouldn\u2019t go in, they couldn\u2019t get any fluid.\u00a0Suddenly, they\u2019re asking me if I&#8217;d had a blood test for HIV and telling me they would need to do that, and they\u2019ll need to do\u00a0surgery for a biopsy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was working a job with no insurance and so they\u00a0told\u00a0me they\u2019d get me an appointment at Lincoln Hospital,\u201d\u00a0she\u00a0remembers. \u201cAfter a week, my doctor calls me and tells me he\u2019s gotten me an appointment. I walk in and there are two doctors.\u201d She didn\u2019t know it at the time, but in the midst of horror, she\u2019d just gotten her first blessing. \u201cLincoln Hospital wasn\u2019t known for treating cancer patients. They were known for treating gunshot wounds.\u201d Today she realizes how\u00a0lucky\u00a0she\u00a0was to\u00a0be in the care of those two doctors.<\/p>\n<p>The results were back far too quickly. \u201cWe\u2019ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that we know\u00a0it\u2019s a carcinoma. The bad news is that we don\u2019t know where the primary site is,\u201d her doctor told her. They called for a second opinion. That\u2019s when her world changed. She was\u00a0diagnosed\u00a0with Stage 4 carcinoma of the pharynx.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3748\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ehope-mona-pierre-louis.png?resize=800%2C800&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eHOPE mona pierre louis\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>The family you choose: finding strength in unexpected places<\/h3>\n<p>In that moment her spirit was broken.\u00a0 For a\u00a0fleeting\u00a0moment, thoughts of suicide entered her mind. She could not believe at 21 years old her life had taken such a\u00a0dramatic\u00a0change. She felt like she had been given a death sentence and recalls her oncologist telling her to \u201cgo home and be surrounded by your family. We\u2019ll figure out the treatment you need and you\u2019ll\u00a0be ok.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was easier said than done and those words did little to comfort Mona at that time. \u201cBeing on my own at 16, I didn\u2019t have a close family.\u201d Suddenly, the colleagues from her part time job at a flower shop became her lifeline, loving her, supporting her, attending chemo treatments, and going to doctor appointments with her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I got home from my first chemo, one of my friends took me out\u00a0dancing. My friends were there to\u00a0encourage\u00a0me\u00a0and give me\u00a0strength\u00a0when I was weak.\u00a0I\u00a0realized it\u2019s true that you never know what strangers will become your friends and family.\u201d\u00a0(One of those friends even walked her down the aisle at\u00a0her wedding a few years ago!)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started finding my strength. When I walked in for radiation, I\u00a0started\u00a0to\u00a0notice the other people in the waiting room who were worse off than me. I kept telling myself that at least I could walk,\u201d Mona\u00a0says gratefully. \u201cFrom\u00a0then on, I think my positivity helped me keep moving. I remember when I was having radiation thinking that radiation was like\u00a0PacMan, getting\u00a0rid of\u00a0all the bad cells. I used to play\u00a0PacMan\u00a0a lot and I kept that in my head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When treatment was over, like many young adult cancer survivors, she struggled to decide how much of her struggle she would disclose.\u00a0 At first, she opted for silence. \u201cIt was so hard\u00a0to talk about. I didn\u2019t tell\u00a0boyfriends,\u00a0thinking maybe they would\u00a0run away.\u00a0There was always that fear.\u00a0\u00a0When I met my future husband at my job,\u00a0I didn\u2019t tell him\u00a0until\u00a0after we were engaged.\u00a0He\u2019d lost his mom and his dad to cancer. I didn\u2019t want to make him afraid to lose me\u00a0as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Forgiveness and growth<\/h3>\n<p>Today, she\u2019s making a different choice.\u00a0\u201cNow, I\u2019m proud to be part of this journey, to be a survivor. There\u2019s nothing to be ashamed of.\u00a0I share my story loud and proud. I want to be an inspiration, a glimmer of hope to those who are in the fight. I never want anyone to feel as alone as I did at times on my journey.\u201d<br \/>\nShe\u2019s also found healing with her estranged family. \u201cI started reading Bernie Siegel\u2019s book\u00a0<em>Love, Medicine and Miracles<\/em>. \u201cIt taught me\u00a0not to hold things in. I was disappointed\u00a0about the way my family had reacted when I was going through treatment.\u00a0I felt they were not there for me.\u00a0For many years this painful thought made me keep them at arm\u2019s length.\u00a0I loved them, but from a distance.\u00a0Bernie\u2019s book helped me realize that people aren\u2019t going to react the way I want them to. I had to let that\u00a0pain go.\u00a0 I started on the path of understanding\u00a0and forgiveness. It took a long time to remove the hurts of the past but through prayer and reflection I am now able to enjoy\u00a0a loving relationship with my\u00a0family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/get-support\/get-matched\/with-a-cancer-survivor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-3428 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/match-me-cube.png?resize=203%2C203&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"match me cube\" width=\"203\" height=\"203\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That forgiveness allowed her to be helpful when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. \u201cI went down to Florida when she was diagnosed.\u00a0\u00a0We weren\u2019t always as close like I\u2019d wanted to be, but I knew I had to be by her side. I thought I\u2019d die young,\u201d she says reflectively. \u201cBut I became very strong and know I could be strong for her and my family. Because I\u2019d been there, I was able to tell my brother and family what the journey was going to be like for mom.\u00a0 We made peace before she passed away.\u00a0 Before she passed on, I was able to look at my mother with forgiveness, understanding, compassion and love.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Finding support and connection with a peer mentor<\/h3>\n<p>Mona\u00a0also connected with a CHN Support Volunteer. \u201cWhen I would have blood work or a procedure, I\u2019d call and it would put my mind at ease. I was so happy to talk with someone who\u2019d been there.\u201d She decided it was time for her to give back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to live my life in a positive way, to help people. After my scans were coming back clean, I did my CHN training.\u201d\u00a0She\u2019s\u00a0been\u00a0giving back as a Support Volunteer\u00a0since 1999,\u00a0taking her responsibility seriously.\u00a0\u201cThis doesn\u2019t have to be a death sentence. I remember having my first call. Going back and talking about my journey\u00a0was challenging. I tell matches to look at me now.\u00a0I tell them that it will be them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than two decades after her diagnosis, Mona life is intentionally filled with peace and joy.\u00a0\u201cGod gave me a second chance, and I took it, and I Live! I know it can be taken away in any moment so I live it boldly and fearlessly.\u00a0\u00a0Every day that I wake up, I realize I am so blessed everyday, first because I have my health, and second, because I\u2019m happily married to a man who loves all of me.\u00a0I never thought I\u2019d be married.\u00a0\u00a0I never thought I would see my forties, but here I am!&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Travelling the world and inspiring others<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI felt like cancer was going to be a death sentence. But I\u2019m still here, I\u2019m still living.\u201d Cancer made Mona want to travel the world, she booked a trip with Contiki Tour by herself, and went to Europe. \u201cCancer pushed me to do more, to get out of my comfort zone,\u201d she says. \u201cMy victory has made me fearless.\u00a0Everything I went through, I don\u2019t regret.\u00a0I lived to beat cancer.\u00a0I live for my mother who\u00a0never got to fully live her life. I am a cancer warrior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3749\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ehope-mona-pierre-louis-1.png?resize=800%2C800&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eHOPE mona pierre louis (1)\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><br \/>\nMona loves mantras, wearing positive words as good reminders of what\u2019s important.\u00a0\u00a0She loves instilling faith and hope in people. She\u2019s even begun creating bracelets &amp; T-shirts to shout out encouragement to the world.\u00a0\u00a0She believes \u201cNo matter what anyone says, it\u2019s you at your core. You have to dig in. You have to do the work yourself. You have to believe you can survive.
