{"id":3656,"date":"2019-07-25T11:36:28","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T11:36:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.cancerhopenetwork.org\/?p=3656"},"modified":"2023-11-10T16:10:07","modified_gmt":"2023-11-10T21:10:07","slug":"local-support-national-reach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/blog\/local-support-national-reach\/","title":{"rendered":"Local support, national reach.","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For more than a decade, Cancer Hope Network and St. Charles Cancer Center have been teaming up to create hope and provide support for cancer patients and caregivers in the greater Bend area.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/stcharleshealth\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  alignright wp-image-3428\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/match-me-cube.png?resize=227%2C228&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"match me cube\" width=\"227\" height=\"228\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur first training in Bend was in May 2008,\u201d recalls CHN Executive Director Cynthia Gutierrez Bernstein. \u201cIt was one of my first out of state trainings as head of our programs team and we trained a wonderful group of volunteers. Since then, almost 90 St. Charles survivors and caregivers have completed training. They\u2019ve had more than 2,000 visits with more than 1,000 clients. Cancer Hope works with many wonderful organizations across the nation, but St. Charles will always have a special place in my heart.\u201d<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/volunteer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"  alignleft wp-image-3715\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/become-a-volunteer-cube.png?resize=219%2C219&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"become a volunteer cube\" width=\"219\" height=\"219\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><br \/>Those volunteers provide support for cancer patients and caregivers throughout Central Oregon no matter where they are being treated. Volunteers are trained and supported by the CHN Programs Team, a group of nursing and social work professionals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartnering with Cancer Hope Network helps us connect patients and caregivers who are currently being treated with someone who\u2019s been through a similar experience,\u201d said Wendy Rudy, St. Charles Cancer Center Survivorship &amp; Community Education Coordinator. \u201cThey provide support locally, but CHN\u2019s deep bench of volunteers across the nation means support is available for patients facing a rarer cancer. The crossover between our Cancer Center volunteers and those trained as CHN Support Volunteers provides an added depth of support for patients and caregivers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But healing doesn\u2019t end when active treatment is complete and adjusting to the new normal of life after cancer can be challenging.\u00a0Peers for Progress notes that while there is much attention paid to the needs of the recently diagnosed and those currently undergoing treatment for illness, \u201cmuch less thought is given, however, to the distinctive educational and psychological needs of individuals in the decades following their diagnoses\u2026\u201d (<em>Global Evidence for Peer Support: Humanizing Healthcare<\/em>, 2014). Our Support Volunteers report that our initial and ongoing volunteer training, combined with professional support from our Programs team and an opportunity to \u201cpay it forward\u201d has helped them find meaning and empowerment in their survivorship.<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3658\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/ehope-bend.png?resize=800%2C800&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eHOPE Bend\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>\u201cCancer survivors, in general, have a great deal of knowledge about their disease and the post-surgical concerns and the rehab issues their patients likely will face,\u201d says longtime Support Volunteer Jeff Scott. \u201cSometimes it&#8217;s hard to see the pain and suffering others are enduring but there is much personal satisfaction in knowing you&#8217;ve made a difference in someone\u2019s life.\u201d<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3659\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/ehope-bend-1.png?resize=800%2C800&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eHOPE Bend (1)\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><br \/>\u201cBeing a CHN volunteer has helped me find some purpose and meaning, not in spite of, but because of my cancer experience,\u201d agrees Support Volunteer Marci Floski. \u201cI think others might want to consider volunteering with CHN to have this same experience. A cancer diagnosis and all that comes with it, can be daunting. Being a volunteer reminds us that none of us suffers alone. It&#8217;s a powerful source of connection and can bring a sense of value to the difficulties one has gone through. It is proof that we each have much to give, even though it may feel that life has taken so much away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CHN and St. Charles Cancer Center will hold their next training session this fall.
