A young mother of two (\u201cI was 37. My kids were 1 and 3.\u201d), her coworkers encouraged her to visit the mobile mammogram van visiting her office. They ignored her \u201cI\u2019m not old enough\u201d protests and she joined the group for testing that would keep her alive.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"  alignleft wp-image-2328\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/match-me2.jpg?resize=211%2C79&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/matchme.html\" width=\"211\" height=\"79\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>\u201cA few weeks later, I\u2019m diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer and they\u2019re fine,\u201d she remembers fondly, if a bit grimly. It was one more piece of awful news in a year jam-packed with awful news. \u201cMy mother-in-law was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in May, my sister-in-law with colon cancer on July 4<sup>th<\/sup>. On my son\u2019s first birthday in August, I received my diagnosis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began treatment, but soon faced many complications, including a chemo-induced blood clot on her lung. \u201cI was in the ICU for nearly a month,\u201d she recalls. \u201cThey weren\u2019t sure I would make it. My first medical team was ignoring symptoms, side effects and drug interactions. The decision to move to a different oncology team was simple. I was blunt with my new oncologist \u2018You\u2019re hired. Please don\u2019t let me die. My kids are too little.\u2019 That started a new relationship of open communication and making sure my doctor knew all of my side effects \u2013 and addressed the ones we could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, after a double mastectomy, 38 rounds of radiation, 12 cycles of chemo, 2 pulmonary embolisms, chronic recurrent cellulitis infections and at least 15 hospital admissions, Bridget\u2019s health is vastly improved. She\u2019s once again exercising. She has scars, but views them as badges of courage, not something to hide. \u201cFor each scar, I have a story to tell you. Yes, I survived. And you will too. Your inner strength, faith, hope and love will help you through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s grateful for the many ways her community came together in support &#8211; from\u00a0 the integrative services offered at Carol G. Simon Center (\u201cThey offered me such love, support, guidance, direction, a plan\u2026\u201d) to friends she barely knew (\u201cThe community at Little Village Daycare collected money and paid for a cleaning service for a year. Each week, a family took a turn cooking two meals for me. These women pulled together and I didn\u2019t even know them. Talk about the power of love and care.\u201d) and her incredible husband Erich (\u201cHe is a firefighter, the most amazing man ever. He lost his mother in the middle of all of it, but he stood by my side, helped me mentally, physically, emotionally. He was my solid rock to the right of me. He always did things to make me feel special and outlandish. Never made me feel sick. He faced it right there with me.\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s overjoyed to be watching her kids grow up. \u201cWe\u2019re taking time to watch sunrises together,\u201d Bridget smiles. \u201cAt one point, the doctor sat across from me and told me that I had three weeks to live. I bought two notebooks and started writing letters to each kid, focusing on every milestone I could think of. I recorded myself reading them stories through one of those Hallmark recording books.\u201d<br \/>Bridget lives by her favorite mantra \u2013 \u201cGet up. Dress up. Show up and smile. If you look good, you\u2019re going to feel good it\u2019s that simple.\u201d Her energy and zest for life is infectious. \u201cEven though you\u2019re feeling shi**y, look in the mirror, face it and say, I\u2019ve got this. I painted on my eyebrows. I wore big earrings and red lipstick. I was really into hats. Wigs made me claustrophobic so I got hats.\u201d Her mother would also provide comfort and shopping ideas for all kinds of hats.<br \/><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3398\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/ehope-bridget-hochstuhl-1.png?resize=800%2C800&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"eHOPE Bridget Hochstuhl (1)\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><br \/>But she\u2019s never forgotten those days after diagnosis. \u201cI tell people the raw truth. You\u2019ll deal with unknown side effects, the sleepless nights, challenges of acclimating back into society when your treatment is over.\u00a0 No Reason to minimize what happened, just raw truth that yes these things happened to me, but I channeled my energy to focus on the reason why I had to get better.\u00a0 When you have a reason why, you find a way HOW. It\u2019s that simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3408\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3408\" style=\"width: 1110px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3408\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/facebook-1.jpg?resize=800%2C389&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\".facebook (1)\" width=\"800\" height=\"389\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3408\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bridget treasures every chance to watch the sunset with her children.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She recommends every patient gets a notebook, encouraging them to write what they\u2019re thinking, what they\u2019re feeling and, most of all, five things they\u2019re grateful for each day. \u201cWhatever that was, acknowledge it as something that was monumental. It helps validate your feelings and provide perspective.\u201d<br \/>When asked about the best advice she ever received, Bridget\u2019s answer is simple, \u201cDon\u2019t worry about anything. It\u2019s going to be all right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Going through chemo, she\u2019d gone to an ice cream shop craving peanut butter ice cream. Just before she stepped to the counter, the clerk scraped the last of the peanutty goodness from the bucket. \u201cAs I glumly looked at the empty container, the kid next to me, with the confidence of a three year old holding a rainbow bubblegum cone, encouraged me with those words. \u2018Don\u2019t worry about anything. It\u2019s going to be all right.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalk about \u2018out of the mouths of babes,\u201d she laughs, recalling the lightning bolt of inspiration. \u201cHere\u2019s this kid who knows nothing about me. But she was right. It did turn out all right.\u201d (<em>And the worker brought out another tub of peanut butter.<\/em>)<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/support\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  alignright wp-image-2328\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/match-me2.jpg?resize=232%2C87&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/matchme.html\" width=\"232\" height=\"87\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shortly after treatment, her mother was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. Bridget knew all too well the journey and wanted to provide the same comfort and support as she received.\u00a0 Her mom is doing well and now lives with her family.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget\u2019s focus continues to be on hope \u2013 \u201cYou have to live for now. You cannot worry about tomorrow. It\u2019s promised to no one. When you worry, it\u2019s like walking around with an umbrella waiting for it to rain.\u201d Looking back at the fight she\u2019s fought, she knows proverbial rain may fall, encouraging matches that \u201cThe sun is going to shine again. Life sucks right now. But the sun will shine again. Go do everything you want to do. Make your bucket list and check it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore the C word, I would have never done that. Since the C word, I\u2019ve gone to the Saratoga Springs, Lake George, Walt Disney World and have watched many sunrises in Siesta Key with good friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember these key profound words that STORMS always lose to the sun. \u201c<br \/>\u201cGET UP. DRESS UP. SHOW UP.
