It also changed Diane Bongiorno\u2019s approach to living and \u201cpaying it forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was about a year past treatment from my first cancer diagnosis and my friend put a CHN brochure in my lap during one of our every-Monday lunches,\u201d Diane recalled. \u201cTo this day, I don\u2019t know what her intention was, to get help <u>for me<\/u> or to have me help others. But my first thought was, \u2018I want to help!\u2019\u201d<br \/>\nAnd help she has! Professionally, she\u2019s spoken with countless people impacted by cancer as a member of the Patient Services team. In her role as Support Volunteer, she\u2019s had match conversations with 226 patients and caregivers, providing a listening ear, steadfast encouragement, and most of all \u2013 she did her best to provide hope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the beginning, Diane has helped people navigate through their diagnoses \u2013 gently, with kindness, knowledge, empathy and care,\u201d Executive Director Wanda Diak said. \u201cDespite a recurrence of her cancer as well as another primary diagnosis, Diane never showed the angst she was experiencing as she dealt with her own health challenges.\u201d<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/gala\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3288\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/gala-18-bongiorno1-e1538595464988.png?resize=800%2C581&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"gala-18-bongiorno1.png\" width=\"800\" height=\"581\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u201cWorking at (and with) Cancer Hope Network satisfied my need to share my experience with others and gave me an opportunity to help people cope with their cancer diagnosis. This fit was what I needed,\u201d Diane agreed. \u201cFrom the moment I started, this was my \u201chome away from home.\u201dI loved the atmosphere in the office, the team approach, the camaraderie and the openness of sharing ideas. Working for CHN also became <u>my support group<\/u>. It\u2019s an extremely supportive environment.\u00a0 We practice what we preach \u2013 reaching out to people and helping others.\u201d<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"  alignleft wp-image-3293\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ticket-button.jpg?resize=224%2C83&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"ticket button\" width=\"224\" height=\"83\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t just Diane being able to help others and being helped herself. Tom, always incredibly supportive of Diane, soon found his own perspective changed. \u201cI\u2019m a business person. My interests have always been very narrow (business, and the Yankees),\u201d Tom laughed. \u201cDiane would come home and tell me about her day in Patient Services. My head felt like it was exploding trying to comprehend how difficult her job was, speaking with people from all over the country, going through probably the worst time in their life, and Diane was there to listen and help them move forward \u2013 always giving hope. I give her so much credit for being able to do that, call after call, day after day. I could not do it.\u201d His pride evident, he turned to her. \u201cYou helped a lot of people who were feeling defeated or going through almost impossible times.\u201d<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"  alignright wp-image-3292\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/journal-button.jpg?resize=224%2C84&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"journal button\" width=\"224\" height=\"84\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>\u201cI can\u2019t do anything close to what Diane does, but I needed to help in my own way,\u201d he continued. Tom\u2019s \u201cown way\u201d soon meant marshalling friends, clients and colleagues to support Cancer Hope Network fundraisers. It meant bringing his talents to bear for the organization. \u00a0\u201cI help people give,\u201d he said thoughtfully. \u201cMost people <u>want<\/u> to help, but they don\u2019t always know <u>how<\/u> to help. \u00a0My goal is to find a way to make it easy for them to help Cancer Hope Network.\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3289\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/gala-18-bongiorno2.png?resize=800%2C671&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"gala 18 bongiorno2\" width=\"800\" height=\"671\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><br \/>\nFor eighteen years, Tom and Diane have been finding ways to do what needs to be done. \u00a0\u201cWe watched their family grow with the marriages of Christen and Stephen \u2013 and then the birth of their three (almost 4) beloved grandchildren,\u201d Diak reminisced. \u201cThey brought their immediate and extended family to events as guests and attendees. They\u2019ve recruited associates and friends as volunteers. They\u2019re not just part of the CHN family. It\u2019s safe to say CHN has become part of their family.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  alignright wp-image-2328\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/match-me2.jpg?resize=280%2C104&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/matchme.html\" width=\"280\" height=\"104\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTom and I have a personal relationship with Hope.
