Ben was 14 when his dad passed away after a year-long battle with colon cancer. At that time, they also welcomed two children and began building their business <a href=\"https:\/\/smithandsmithrealtygroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smith &amp; Smith Realty Group<\/a>. Caregiving and its emotional toll defined the early years of early marriage. \u201cYou\u2019d pick it a thousand times, but it can be frustrating.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair wanted to get more involved with their community in a more active way and their research brought them to Cancer Hope Network. They knew immediately they\u2019d found a cause to rally for. \u201cYou just feel kind of alone in the process (of caregiving),\u201d Ben said. \u201cYour friends don\u2019t get it. Even families can struggle to understand the challenges of caring for a loved one 24\/7. You are a caregiver and also a new parent. It was like: wait a minute. You can get paired up with someone who knows what it\u2019s like to be a caregiver. Or someone for my mom to connect with? They planned quickly, learning the ropes of fundraising and permits and promotional challenges as they went. \u201cIt was kind of nerve-wracking hosting our first event,\u201d Leah recalls. \u201cBut as we saw people start pouring in, it was incredible. We\u2019re grateful to our personal community for coming out \u2013 and it was exciting to see people who\u2019d found us online and through promotions.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/231A1489-1.jpg?resize=432%2C288&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17630\" width=\"432\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/231A1489-1.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/231A1489-1.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/231A1489-1.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/231A1489-1.jpg?w=1368&amp;ssl=1 1368w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>They handed out rally towels for the attendees to write the names of loved ones they were walking for, with walkers. For some attendees, the event was the first opportunity to see the historic town up close. For others, it was an opportunity to enjoy the delicious flavors of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/anj_foodserviceonwheels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A &amp; J Food Services<\/a>. For all, it was a chance to remember loved ones lost too soon and celebrate survivors and caregivers still with us.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful to Ben, Leah, and the Smith &amp; Smith Realty Group for helping increase awareness of the need for and availability of peer support,\u201d said CHN Associate Director of Special Events, Randibeth Gallant. \u201cThe funds they raised will help ensure no one faces cancer alone.
