By donating equity instead, I was able to give the amount I wished without paying the long-term capital gains I would have had to pay if I liquidated any of my stock positions. CHN and I both won in this arrangement. They got a bigger donation amount; I paid no capital gains tax on the amount I donated, and come April, I will be able to claim a tax deduction for the whole amount donated.
