{"id":16542,"date":"2022-10-31T18:24:42","date_gmt":"2022-10-31T18:24:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/?p=16542"},"modified":"2022-10-31T18:24:46","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T18:24:46","slug":"lgbtqia-cancer-disparities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/blog\/lgbtqia-cancer-disparities\/","title":{"rendered":"Cancer and the LGBTQIA+ Community\u00a0","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Disparities in healthcare effect many minority groups, as LGBTQIA history month comes to an end, we look at some of those inconsistencies in the queer community and how CHN can help. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Cancer Society<\/a>, \u201cPotential cancer disparities in cervical, breast, lung, and other types of cancer are largely due to discrimination and other factors.\u201d <sup>1 <\/sup>These factors range from financial, fear, to family support.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-preventative-care\">Preventative Care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to cancer screenings, treatment and care, money is a huge issue and \u201cCompared to heterosexual, cisgender people, LGBTQ people\u202fare more likely to be unemployed, uninsured, lack access to health care, and delay health care\u2014including care that\u2019s critical to help prevent cancer and screen for it.\u201d<sup>2 <\/sup>Our friends at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancercare.org\/tagged\/lgbtq+\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CancerCare<\/a> have some great resources.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/3-2.png?resize=800%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"LGBTQIA+ CHN\" class=\"wp-image-16546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/3-2.png?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/3-2.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/3-2.png?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/3-2.png?resize=1536%2C864&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/3-2.png?w=1600&amp;ssl=1 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-homophobia-and-transphobia\">Homophobia and Transphobia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another major hurdle many in the community face is homophobia and transphobia. This unfortunately extends to health care. \u201cLGBT patients often face a combination of ignorance and discrimination in accessing health care. While homophobia and transphobia among healthcare providers is declining, it is still very much in existence.\u201d\u202f<sup>3 <\/sup>This discrimination can lead to queer people avoiding preventative care. \u201cPrevious or feared negative responses from health care providers frequently keep too many LGBT individuals from seeking routine care and cancer screening.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-chn-can-help\">How CHN Can Help<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Queer people may face homophobia within their own family and thus many have a chosen family. Support from loved ones is a major factor in cancer care. The <a href=\"https:\/\/cancer-network.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National LGBT Cancer Network Cancer<\/a> states, \u201cFamily support is critical for cancer survivors. LGBT people create families in ways that are often invisible or unwelcome in a health care setting.\u201d<sup>\u202f<\/sup><sup>5<\/sup><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where CHN comes in. Many studies have shown that emotional support during a cancer journey is critical to the mental health and stress relief of someone facing a diagnosis. For more than 40 years, our team has been connecting patients and caregivers with trained Support Volunteer mentors who understand. Matches are based on a shared diagnosis, similar treatments, or shared life experiences. Including sexual and gender identity.
