Since then, my life has been an endless cycle of \u201cI\u2019m so sorry to hear that\u201d and \u201cI know someone with cancer, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html \/--><!-- wp:html -->\n<p>When I was growing up, people would constantly ask me how she was doing. It was always awkward.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html -->\n<p>Of course, most people still didn\u2019t know what to say, what to ask or how to do it. \u201cHow is she?\u201d was still code for \u201cIs she still alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html \/--><!-- wp:html -->\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/support\">Request a free and confidential peer match with a cancer survivor who understands<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html \/--><!-- wp:html -->\n<p>It was worse when someone asked me in person. Between avoiding eye contact and a longer-than-necessary pause after the question, the whole conversation felt forced. (<a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/fivewaystohelp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">READ: How to Help When Your Loved One is Facing Cancer<\/a>)<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html \/--><!-- wp:html -->\n<p>Written communication \u2014 whether it was a text message or an email \u2014 is almost always better than an actual face-to-face conversation. It allows the receiver time to figure out what to respond or whether to respond at all.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html \/--><!-- wp:html -->\n<p>Sometimes, no response was the best thing I could offer someone, and that\u2019s okay. Don\u2019t always expect your loved one to get back to you right away. You can even message that: \u201cNo response needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html \/--><!-- wp:html -->\n<p>I do that with my mom all the time. Yes, she\u2019s still alive. In fact, she\u2019s going on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/a-family-affair-with-cancer_us_5797d507e4b0e002a3143aa8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">23 years as a breast cancer survivor<\/a>, but she\u2019s not in the clear. Every week, she undergoes chemotherapy; every six months, scans are taken. Time hasn\u2019t necessarily made it easier, but technology certainly has.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html \/--><!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"right\"} -->\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/scalefit_720_noupscale\/58ac7207280000b58f99a405.png?w=800\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>\n<figcaption>While it is not always easy, I try to check in as much as possible.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image --><!-- wp:html -->\n<h2>Putting Texting Into Practice<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html -->\n<p>I no longer live at home; I live in another state. Call it long-distance caregiving or simply being a caring daughter, but texting (and FaceTime) has made it much easier to be present and supportive throughout my mom\u2019s cancer journey.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html \/--><!-- wp:html -->\n<p>When the average American already sends and receives an estimated 85 text messages a day, why not use texting as a support mechanism?<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"center\"} -->\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/scalefit_720_noupscale\/58ac725d280000250099a407.jpg?w=800\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>\n<figcaption>We spend hours on our phones every day. Now, we can use that time to support our loved ones.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image --><!-- wp:html -->\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html -->\n<p>If you\u2019re comfortable sending someone you love who has been diagnosed with cancer a text message to show support, where do you begin?<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html \/--><!-- wp:html -->\n<p>Because crafting the right text message or email may be harder for some people, I\u2019ve included a list of 12 text messages you can use.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html \/--><!-- wp:html -->\n<p><strong><a href=\"\/support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finished crafting the perfect text message?<br \/>Tell them about our free &amp; confidential peer support for cancer patients.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:html --><!-- wp:html \/--><!-- wp:html -->\n<p>But I offer you a warning: People are not one size fits all and neither are these messages.
