Many of them are caring for a loved one battling cancer. At Cancer Hope Network, we\u2019ve seen a growing number of requests from caregivers and loved ones looking for support. As our current group of cancer caregiver volunteers continue to provide high-quality support, <strong>we are looking for cancer caregivers who would like to serve as volunteers<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The gift of caregiving<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cancer caregiving is a powerful gift, an opportunity to serve a loved one facing one of life\u2019s great challenges. It\u2019s inspiring and hopeful to help a loved one through the storm of cancer. Navigating appointments and making sure medications are taken on time and your support community is informed can be empowering (You\u2019re doing something that\u2019s tangible and helpful!). But it can also be terrifying (What if my loved one dies?) and lonely (I\u2019m keeping a brave face because I don\u2019t want my loved one to know how worried I am.) Caring for a loved one who\u2019s been diagnosed with cancer can also be emotionally draining and professionally challenging (missing work! maintaining health insurance!).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Find organizations that provide resources for cancer patients and their loved ones<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/eHOPE-caregiver-1.png?resize=800%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The challenges of cancer caregiving<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the best of circumstances, cancer caregiving is isolating and scary, an emotion packed journey. But cancer caregiving doesn\u2019t come to the best of circumstances. It is indiscriminate in who or when it hits. (WATCH: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curetoday.com\/view\/caring-for-the-caregiver-seeking-support-through-cancer-hope-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Caring for the Caregiver: Seeking Support Through Cancer Hope Network<\/a>)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Life doesn\u2019t magically become perfect when the doctor gives a diagnosis and longstanding family dynamics aren\u2019t always smoothed with the addition of heartache. No matter how well meant, compliments and encouragement (\u201cYou\u2019re so strong.\u201d \u201cThey\u2019re so lucky to have you.\u201d) can\u2019t keep your eyes open when you\u2019re fighting exhaustion after your loved one had a rough night due to side effects.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-request-a-free-confidential-caregiver-support-match\">Request a free &amp; confidential caregiver support match.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Cancer caregivers sometimes fight and care in quick succession. CHN Support Volunteer Alyssa had just finished her own treatment for head and neck cancer when both parents were diagnosed with two different cancers. Caregiver volunteer Kaci supported her husband through his four-year fight with glioblastoma. Two months after his death, as her three small children began recovering, her mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CHN\u2019s peer mentors understand those competing emotions and contrasting realities. They are here to listen. They\u2019re here to provide guidance, resources, and hope. They will remind you that while this may be your first time serving as a cancer caregiver, you are not the first. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curetoday.com\/view\/it-takes-a-village-cancer-caregivers-need-to-care-for-themselves-too\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meet Pat, a caregiver helping others care for themselves<\/a>.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.com\/support\"><strong><em>&nbsp;(Learn more about serving as a cancer caregiver mentor)<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How caregiver volunteers can help<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Serving as a peer mentor with Cancer Hope Network is a convenient, meaningful way to give back. For caregivers living with immunocompromised survivors, the fact that training happens online and matches are made by telephone make it an ideal virtual volunteer opportunity.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Support Volunteers help fellow caregivers learn the new language of oncology and deal with the wide range of emotions their loved one is feeling (READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/blog\/reasons-behind-the-rage-how-to-help-when-cancer-patients-lash-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reasons Behind the Rage<\/a> from our community of survivors and caregivers).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volunteers, along with our Programs Team, can help new caregivers find help and resources\u00a0 (CanCare offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancercare.org\/casemanagement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social worker led case managment<\/a>, Cancer Support Community offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancersupportcommunity.org\/ten-tips-caregivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tips for getting started as a caregiver<\/a>, the American Cancer Society\u2019s Caregiver Resource Guide includes a wide variety of resources \u2013 including information on respite care)\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than anything, Cancer Hope Network mentor volunteers are great listeners.
