Superman has a cape. Captain America has his shield. Doctor Who has his TARDIS. In short, superheroes need tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Volunteer Appreciation Week, we celebrate the everyday heroism of our amazing, incredible \u2013 dare we say heroic?!? \u2013 Support Volunteers. They don\u2019t have lassos or shields or Vibranium anything \u2013 but they do have phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"\/volunteer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/cube4.jpg?resize=184%2C184&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12717\" width=\"184\" height=\"184\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And those phones have power. In the hands of a trained survivor or caregiver, some bits of metal and plastic become a superheroes\u2019 weapon against despair. Their super power? HOPE! Each time they accept a new match, send a call or a text, they\u2019re saving, not a city, but someone\u2019s calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what their tools, the throughline of every hero\u2019s story is courage. Courage in the face of evil, darkness or difficult times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our volunteers share that courage with clients like Lucille** who wrote to \u201cJane is wonderful!! A perfect match for me. I was really reluctant to do this, I felt I was going ok and didn&#8217;t really need any support (stubborn). But when I&nbsp; started talking to her it was as if I already knew her!! God bless her for what she has gone thru and be so willing to support me and listen&#8230;very humbling\u2764\ufe0f&nbsp; I hope to return the service to someone else, one day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1-1.png?resize=800%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1-1.png?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1-1.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1-1.png?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1-1.png?resize=1536%2C864&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1-1.png?w=1600&amp;ssl=1 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Or Heloise** who thanked her volunteer directly. \u201cShe told me that I always lift her spirits and she feels \u201chealing\u201d after talking with me and that she thought I was put on this earth to help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One volunteer, now retired, reached out to connect when their cancer returned. \u201cAs I former volunteer, I know how the service works. Now, as a client, I was humbled by the compassion of those I spoke with, both staff and volunteer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the theme for Volunteer Appreciation Week is empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It\u2019s particularly fitting, for our volunteers, as they listen and mentor patients and caregivers across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cancer can bring out the best in our personal networks, as friends rally and family host fundraisers and bring dinner. But it can also be <a href=\"https:\/\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/blog\/friendship-doesnt-run-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">isolating<\/a>, as friends and family wait to be asked for help or struggle to find the right words to say. Keeping your foot out of your mouth when a loved one is facing cancer<\/a>.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"\/support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/cube3.jpg?resize=186%2C186&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12716\" width=\"186\" height=\"186\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But in that isolation, nearly 500 CHN Support Volunteers grab their phones, marshal their courage and live out the definition of empathy, reducing anxiety, inspiring courage and bringing out the best of humanity. \u201cMark was able to outline what&#8217;s coming up for me and dampen my anxiety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo say that we appreciate our volunteers is an understatement. Put bluntly, Cancer Hope Network wouldn\u2019t exist without the hundreds of Support Volunteers who show up when life is dark. Each year, in thousands of phone calls, text message and emails, they\u2019re demonstrating heroic empathy. Our volunteers aren\u2019t flashy,\u201d said CHN Director of Programs Samantha Schrager. \u201cThey aren\u2019t looking for awards or recognition \u2013 in fact, many of them don\u2019t even recognize the noble work their doing as anything out of the ordinary. But in that ordinariness is hope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volunteer Appreciation Week comes around once a year \u2013 but each and every day, we are thankful for the superheroes who share their compassion, their strength and courage.
