If&nbsp;I can just give&nbsp;my matches&nbsp;even&nbsp;one nugget&nbsp;of information,&nbsp;that would be great.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nuggets of wisdom she shares are hard won. Kristin\u2019s&nbsp;cancer was discovered when she felt like she was having contractions \u2013 but wasn\u2019t pregnant.&nbsp;She&nbsp;also had a&nbsp;history of endometriosis and&nbsp;adenomyosis&nbsp;prior to her cancer diagnosis,&nbsp;so&nbsp;Kristin\u2019s&nbsp;care team recommended a hysterectomy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"\/stanford\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Get-Help.jpg?resize=200%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9425\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Kristin was trained as a Support Volunteer earlier this year. She is&nbsp;part of a pilot program between Stanford Health Care and Cancer Hope Network. The pilot\u2019s goal is to help mitigate patients\u2019 and caregivers\u2019 fear and ambiguity around cancer diagnosis, treatment, and clinical trials.&nbsp;It\u2019s an opportunity for patients and caregivers in the East Bay&nbsp;area&nbsp;to receive free and confidential support \u2013 and for survivors and caregivers like Kristin to share their hard-won wisdom.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/eHOPE-Kristen-1.png?resize=800%2C800&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/eHOPE-Kristen-1.png?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/eHOPE-Kristen-1.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/eHOPE-Kristen-1.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/eHOPE-Kristen-1.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/eHOPE-Kristen-1.png?w=1080&amp;ssl=1 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially diagnosed with a slow-growing&nbsp;endometrioid&nbsp;tumor,&nbsp;Kristin&nbsp;was closely monitored&nbsp;by her healthcare team. In addition to the full hysterectomy, Kristin also underwent&nbsp;a lymph node dissection.&nbsp;A year later, she&nbsp;returned from a family vacation and landed in the emergency room. She needed&nbsp;major surgery&nbsp;for&nbsp;a&nbsp;tumor that caused a&nbsp;\u201chumongous\u201d blood clot pressing on her femoral artery.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with adenosarcoma, which had spread, with lesions on her liver, requiring removal of eight inches of her colon and a re-built bladder.&nbsp;She spent more than 16 days in the ICU and hospital, and when she recovered, started 10 months of grueling chemotherapy that caused&nbsp;hair loss and neuropathy, which she still has today. She was prescribed&nbsp;Megace&nbsp;and quickly gained 40 pounds, which was extremely difficult.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After 15 years, she had a recurrence of her cancer with more surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. With the removal of part of her small bowel and the inability to properly digest foods, the treatments that saved her life have often been followed by unexpectedly challenging side effects.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is thankful to the family and friends who rallied around her during each of her bouts &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, she\u2019s found perspective.&nbsp;\u201cWhile I have all&nbsp;these things&nbsp;to deal with, the alternative is that a lot of people die from ovarian cancer. But if you\u2019re starting to talk about&nbsp;your body parts and bodily fluids \u2013 and there\u2019s a lot of&nbsp;<em>that<\/em>&nbsp;with ovarian cancer! \u2013 it\u2019s&nbsp;really hard.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The self-proclaimed worrywart has introduced meditation into her daily routine,&nbsp;and it&nbsp;is helping. \u201cMeditation&nbsp;didn\u2019t change me\u2026.but&nbsp;it helped calm me down. It helps me save my worry for when it\u2019s necessary.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s also seeing benefits from her lifelong passion for exercise. \u201cI enjoy it. I feel&nbsp;really good&nbsp;when I&nbsp;exercise, and that&nbsp;has&nbsp;helped me feel better.\u201d Faced with&nbsp;long-term neuropathy (you can find her tripping her way through life)<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>she\u2019s learned to give herself grace when bumping up against new physical limitations.&nbsp;\u201cSometimes, you want everything to be better. But it\u2019s helpful to remember that \u201ceven if I feel 10% better, it\u2019s progress,\u201d she encourages.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristin is an active member of Stanford Medicine\u2019s Cancer Patient Family Action Committee (PFAC), a group of volunteers committed to the patient experience at Stanford. It\u2019s been a fulfilling experience&nbsp;\u2013 \u201cwe provide specific feedback and insights to the&nbsp;coordinators,&nbsp;and they make real changes, which is phenomenal.\u201d&nbsp;When she learned of&nbsp;an&nbsp;opportunity to serve in new ways&nbsp;through the pilot program between Stanford Health and Cancer Hope&nbsp;Network&nbsp;,&nbsp;she leapt at the chance&nbsp;to put&nbsp;her longtime passion for providing peer support into action.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/eHope-Kristen-3-1.png?resize=800%2C800&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/eHope-Kristen-3-1.png?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/eHope-Kristen-3-1.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/eHope-Kristen-3-1.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/eHope-Kristen-3-1.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cancerhopenetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/eHope-Kristen-3-1.png?w=1080&amp;ssl=1 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristin&nbsp;has&nbsp;always been a helper \u2013 providing guidance and answering questions for other patients she met \u2013 but she found the training offered by Cancer Hope Network especially useful.&nbsp;\u201cTraining is very concise. The commitment to complete the coursework is&nbsp;fairly&nbsp;minimal, but you get so much out of it, learning&nbsp;what to do and what not to do when talking to a patient. It gave me confidence and guidance.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She&nbsp;is passionate about&nbsp;her work as a volunteer \u2013 and thankful for the wide range of support offered through&nbsp;this&nbsp;pilot&nbsp;program.&nbsp;She joins Cancer Hope Network\u2019s national bench of&nbsp;volunteers&nbsp;who\u2019ve&nbsp;faced more than 80 types and sub-types of cancer, speak 15 languages and range in age from 19-94.)&nbsp;\u201cCancer Hope Network is like one stop shopping. It provides support for people&nbsp;wherever they are in life,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re like command central for matching people&nbsp;looking for a mentor&nbsp;with a volunteer who&nbsp;is a good fit.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>From our earliest conversations&nbsp;one thing has become clear.&nbsp;Stanford&nbsp;PFACs&nbsp;are&nbsp;made up of&nbsp;extraordinary
